FAQ — Monaco Residency
Is there a minimum bank deposit required?
Yes — Monaco banks typically require a minimum deposit of €500,000 to issue the bank reference letter needed for the residency application. Several private banks require significantly more (€1M–€2M) for HNW onboarding.
How long does the application take?
Typically 3–6 months from filing. EU citizens move faster (no visa required). Non-EU citizens must first obtain a long-stay 'type D' visa from the French consulate.
Do I have to actually live in Monaco?
Yes. The Direction de la Sûreté Publique expects a minimum of ~183 days per year physically in Monaco for tax residency benefits. Utility bills, phone records and travel can be audited at renewal.
Does Monaco residency give me tax-free status?
For most nationalities, yes — no personal income tax, no wealth tax, no capital gains tax on real estate, and no inheritance tax between direct family. French nationals are the notable exception (1963 treaty).
Can I rent instead of buying?
Yes. The lease must be a minimum of 1 year, for your primary residence, and the property must be considered suitable in size (~30sqm minimum single, more for families).
Are mortgages allowed for residency property?
Yes — Monaco allows mortgaged property purchases. However, the bank deposit and income requirements are independent of the property, so you still need the €500k+ deposit on top.
What happens if I'm denied?
You can reapply after remedying the issue (usually financial proof, a prior criminal record, or past Schengen expulsions). Appeals go through the Tribunal Suprême.
After how long can I get Monégasque citizenship?
Naturalisation is possible after 10+ years of continuous residence, but it is fully discretionary (decision of the Sovereign Prince). Very few are granted per year.
